Alleged former member of Cuba’s Interior Ministry arrested by ICE in Miami

A suspected agent of Cuba’s Interior Ministry was arrested in Miami by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for allegedly being in the country illegally, authorities reported.

Daniel Morejón García, a 57-year-old Cuban citizen, was detained by ICE, the FBI, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at his home, ICE officials said Monday. The investigation focused on fraudulent claims he allegedly made upon entering the country, authorities added in a press release.

According to ICE, Morejón García allegedly omitted being a member of the Cuban Communist Party and an agent of the Cuban Interior Ministry on his immigration applications.

In addition, Morejón García allegedly served as president of the National Defense Council in Artemisa province and was a member of the Rapid Response Brigades, ICE said in a press release.

“These groups, comprised of civilians trained and organized by the government, are designed to assist authorities during incidents of social conflict, protests, or riots,” it added.

“Authorities allege that Morejón García was activated by the Cuban government during the island-wide protests on July 11, 2021. In that role, there is evidence that Morejón García assaulted protesters as part of his duties,” the statement read.

Morejón García was in ICE custody awaiting removal from the United States.
