This holiday season, more than 70 senior dogs are waiting for a home at Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS), the county department responsible for the protection, care, and welfare of animals. On December 1st, they launched their special adoption campaign, “Seniors Sleigh Too,” which will run until December 31st.
The initiative aims to highlight the value, nobility, and unconditional love these pets offer, while completely waiving adoption fees for dogs over seven years old and those who have been at the shelter for more than six months.
According to information shared by the agency, all available dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Adopters will also receive a gift package that includes a blanket, a toy, and treats for their new companion.
Annette José, director of MDSA, emphasized that senior dogs are exceptional companions who often adapt quickly to their new families.
“All of our senior dogs would love to have a forever home this holiday season. We need the community’s support to help them find the loving people they’ve been waiting for,” she said.
Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS), a national animal welfare organization that collaborates with MDAS, emphasized that furry friends at this stage of their lives are often unfairly overlooked at shelters.
“Many have already lived in homes and are trained, which makes their transition easier,” said Scott Giacoppo, Director of National Shelter Support.
The staff and volunteers at Miami-Made Animal Services say that because senior dogs tend to stay longer in shelters, they have detailed information about their personalities, allowing prospective owners to find a companion compatible with their lifestyle and thus facilitating the adoption process.
This holiday season, opening your home to a senior dog not only means giving them a second chance, but also receiving love, loyalty, and unconditional companionship. Each of them has waited patiently, dreaming of a loving family. Adopting one of these pets is an act of generosity that transforms lives—theirs and yours. That’s why this December, MDAS invites the community to make a difference and fill a furry heart in need with joy.
