Macy’s confirmed the opening of a new store in Midway Crossings, a shopping center located at 7795 West Flagler Street in West Miami. The announcement comes months after the closure of five stores in South Florida and 61 others in the rest of the U.S. A spokesperson for the Sterling Organization, the company that manages the mall, assured the Miami Herald that the lease has been signed, although construction has not yet begun and an opening date has not been set.
The space Macy’s will occupy will be 30,000 square feet, making it one of the largest in Midway Crossings. It will be surpassed only by Micro Center (3,483 square meters), Costco (150,000 square feet), and Home Depot (110,000 square feet), according to the Sterling Organization’s official website.
The new Macy’s will be larger than Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls, Burlington, and Aldi, which already operate in the same mall. The site map shows the chain’s logo near the food court, along with Five Below and Metro by T-Mobile.
In January, Macy’s announced the closure of 66 stores across the United States as part of its restructuring plan called Bold New Chapter, according to El Nuevo Herald.
Among the affected stores were the Boynton Beach Mall and several furniture stores located in Broward County. Despite the closures, the brand maintains a presence in iconic South Florida malls, such as Aventura Mall, Dadeland Mall, The Falls, and Miami International Mall.
The Midway Crossings shopping center, located in the heart of Miami, has a history that reflects the evolution of retail in South Florida. It was originally opened in September 1970 under the name Midway Mall, and in 1987 it adopted the name Mall of the Americas in an attempt to modernize its image and attract a broader clientele.
Finally, in 2022, the complex was renamed Midway Crossings as part of an ambitious renovation and commercial repositioning process, reported El Nuevo Herald.
Located just a few meters from two of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836), the site enjoys high visibility and accessibility, with a daily traffic flow exceeding 247,000 cars, according to figures published on the Sterling Organization’s official website.
Midway Crossings occupies a 22-hectare site with direct access from the Palmetto Expressway and the Dolphin Expressway, giving it a prime location in one of Miami’s busiest areas.
According to El Nuevo Herald, this shopping center houses some of the nation’s leading brands, including Aldi, Marshalls, Burlington, Ulta Beauty, and Foot Locker, providing a wide range of offerings for consumers.
According to information from the Sterling Organization, the property manager, the roads surrounding the complex carry more than 247,000 vehicles per day, reinforcing its position as a high-impact retail center. In addition to the stores, it also houses one of the largest Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices in Florida, with a surface area of 1,500 square feet.
