Messi scores in Inter Miami’s defeat and is approaching 900 goals

It was a dull afternoon for Inter Miami. In Matchday 12 of Major League Soccer, Javier Mascherano’s team suffered a tough 4-1 defeat to Minnesota United, currently second in the Western Conference, in a match where Lionel Messi was once again a starter and, as in every match, was the Garzas’ main hope. The Rosario native scored his team’s only goal and reached a new historic milestone.

Despite the loss, Messi’s goal had special significance: it was the 860th of his professional career, a new mark that keeps him steadfast in his quest to continue expanding his legacy.

The goal came in the 47th minute of the second half, with the score at 2-0 for Inter Miami. Messi, who was replacing Luis Suárez as a center forward, received a low pass from Jordi Alba, controlled the ball inside the box, and finished with a precise left-footed cross to score and generate some excitement for the visiting team.

However, the momentum was short-lived. Minnesota regained control of the game and ended up sealing the 4-1 victory with another pair of goals, including an own goal by Marcelo Weigandt. With this defeat, Inter Miami fell into fourth place in the Eastern Conference, while Minnesota, with 22 points, remains firmly in second place in the West.

With this new goal, Messi reached 860 goals in 1,100 matches played, an impressive mark that puts him even closer to another milestone: 900 personal goals. His scoring career continues to close in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s, who leads the all-time list with 934 goals in 1,276 matches.

The gap between the two remains, but it has narrowed slightly in recent weeks, as CR7 hasn’t scored in his last few matches.
