Miami-Dade Offers Discounts and Waives Surcharges to Help Thousands Recover Their Driver’s Licenses

Thousands of drivers in Miami-Dade County will be able to access a special benefit during April: the Green Light initiative, a program that facilitates the regularization of traffic tickets with discounts, the reinstatement of suspended licenses, and the elimination of surcharges until April 19, 2026.

This measure responds to the increase in the number of license suspensions, which directly affects the mobility and job stability of many residents.

The office of the County Clerk and Comptroller, Juan Fernández-Barquín, reported that during the Green Light period, an average reduction of 30% will be applied to eligible traffic debts. In addition, extra charges related to accounts referred to collection agencies will be eliminated.

The program, which can be managed online, by phone, or in person, is part of a state strategy to reduce the number of licenses suspended due to accumulated unpaid violations.

According to official data, the measure aims to alleviate the economic impact of license suspensions, particularly when payments cannot be made or court appearances are missed.

The program, which began on Monday, April 8, will run for two years, allowing residents to regularize their status under more accessible conditions and without the pressure of standard late fees.

This offers users the opportunity to reintegrate into the legal and employment system, resuming family and work activities that depend on mobility.

The program provides several management channels, including digital platforms, telephone lines, and in-person assistance at county administrative offices. These mechanisms will allow for the resolution of traffic citations, parking tickets, and some criminal proceedings related to traffic violations.

For those who settle their debts, reinstatement as licensed drivers means regaining the ability to drive and resuming work and family activities.

Fernández-Barquín emphasized, “Operation Green Light gives people a real opportunity to break that cycle,” referring to the vicious cycle caused by license suspension.

The county mayor, Eileen Higgins, stressed that driver’s license reinstatement means more than just regaining the right to drive. “Regaining a license not only means being able to drive again, but also restoring access to job opportunities and essential services,” she stated.

The Green Light initiative includes requirements and procedures for those interested to access the benefits. According to the Clerk of Court’s office, only traffic and parking debts not related to serious crimes will be eligible for discounts and waived surcharges.

Individuals should check if their cases qualify through the county’s online portal or at administrative offices.

The process for settling accounts is simple: users check their status online, receive guidance, and make the payment with the discount applied.

For those without digital access, there are phone lines and in-person service centers in various locations throughout Miami-Dade County, ensuring that no one is excluded due to technological or transportation limitations.

According to the Clerk of Court’s office, approximately 250,000 driver’s licenses are suspended in the county due to unpaid fines or missed court appearances. This high number prompted authorities to develop strategies to regularize drivers’ status and reduce the administrative and judicial burden associated with these violations.

During the last Green Light event in September 2023, more than 5,500 residents resolved their financial obligations, and over $275,000 in collection fees were waived, according to the official Miami-Dade County report.

In addition, more than 1,300 payment plans were established, and more than 1,500 people regained eligibility for the licensing system, provided they had no outstanding fines in other counties or states.
