Prosecutor’s Office Announces Multiple Arrests for Sexual Exploitation on Yachts and in Hotels in Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced Tuesday the dismantling of multiple human trafficking rings and the arrest of several individuals accused of subjecting women and children to severe sexual exploitation schemes.

In a joint appearance with the police chiefs of Miami Springs, Miami Beach, and Coral Gables, and special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the official detailed the rescue of a young mother and her two-year-old daughter, who suffered an extensive cycle of abuse across various state jurisdictions before regaining their freedom in South Florida.

The most alarming case presented by authorities involves Darrell “Heffe” Robertson and his alleged accomplice, Eu’Shunn “Nu Nu” Thomas.

According to the investigation, the 20-year-old victim was lured into the network by romantic promises in Texas, where she began a forced journey through nine U.S. cities, including New Orleans, Memphis, Philadelphia, and New York.

Robertson is accused of forcing the woman to pay a daily quota of $1,000 for prostitution and of using narcotics to keep her awake and functional for long periods.

The cruelty of the scheme was evident in the method of control used by the accused, who is also accused of forcing the victim to have a red high-heeled shoe tattooed on her body, a distinctive mark he allegedly used as a sign of ownership over the women he exploited.

The ordeal ended when the victim managed to contact 911 from the Parkway Inn hotel in Miami Springs after suffering a physical assault.

Police officers, trained to detect signs of human trafficking, took the mother and her young daughter into protective custody and arrested the suspects.

Robertson now faces charges of human trafficking, interstate transportation for exploitation, assault, and physically branding the victim.

The conference also shed light on less conventional forms of trafficking. In Miami Beach, police arrested Kutay Satiroglu, a yacht charter operator accused of recruiting a 17-year-old girl.

According to authorities, what began as a supposed romantic relationship and a job offer as a yacht hostess escalated into the minor being held against her will for sexual purposes.

In a parallel operation, the Coral Gables Police Department carried out “Operation Sanctuary Shield,” an undercover operation designed to lure pimps through escort service websites.

The police action culminated in six arrests at a local hotel, including those of Franyelin Toledo and Jeanfrank Canizalez.

Authorities added child neglect charges against the two defendants after discovering a minor in their care living in deplorable conditions at the residence they shared.

During her remarks, Prosecutor Fernandez Rundle noted that Florida ranks third nationally in reported cases of human trafficking, a fact that compels law enforcement to maintain constant vigilance.

HSI Special Agent in Charge Jose Figueredo emphasized the importance of collaboration between local and federal agencies, which enabled them to track the criminals’ movements across state lines and gather the necessary evidence for prosecutions.

Law enforcement officials agreed that these arrests send a direct message to criminal organizations.

The current strategy seeks not only the arrest of the ringleaders but also the complete dismantling of the logistical and financial infrastructure that facilitates the trafficking of human beings in South Florida.
