The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Miami, Florida, is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the capture of Khalid Ahmed Satary, accused of leading an alleged Medicare fraud scheme. The businessman is on the FBI’s list of most wanted fugitives for this crime and has been on the run since 2022 after violating the terms of his release.
According to official FBI information, Satary owned and operated several diagnostic laboratories in the United States between 2016 and 2019. Investigators maintain that these companies submitted more than $547 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare for expensive and allegedly medically unnecessary cancer genetic tests.
According to the indictment, he allegedly coordinated a network comprised of patient recruiters, telemarketing centers, and telemedicine companies that used deceptive campaigns and illegal payments to healthcare professionals to obtain patient samples.
Each genetic test generated reimbursements of between US$10,000 and US$20,000, allowing the laboratories involved to bill the federal health insurance program hundreds of millions of dollars.
A reward of up to US$150,000 will be awarded to anyone who provides information leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction. The FBI has asked that any information related to the accused be reported through its official channels, as part of the investigation into the alleged multimillion-dollar Medicare fraud.
A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Louisiana indicted Satary on September 26, 2019, for conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, paying and receiving illegal bribes in the healthcare system, and money laundering, among other crimes.
Following his initial arrest, he was released on bail with the condition that he not engage in any further activities related to the healthcare sector. However, prosecutors maintain that he continued to be involved in new illicit operations through laboratories located in Houston, Texas.
For this reason, on November 23, 2022, the court issued a new federal arrest warrant for violating the conditions of his release. He has remained a fugitive ever since.
During a press conference held in Miami, Supervisory Special Agent Freddy Ortiz explained that Satary maintains ties to Florida, Texas, Georgia, Jordan, Dubai, and Israel, leading investigators to believe it is possible he has left the United States.
Ortiz clarified that the agency does not consider him an immediate threat to public safety, although he stressed the importance of locating him so he can face justice. The official FBI profile also indicates that the fugitive used various aliases, including Rocky Satary and DJ Rock Satary, along with several birthdates.
Satary is approximately 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 meters) tall, weighs about 150 pounds (68 kilograms), has black hair and brown eyes.
