The Miami Police Department announced the arrest of Cassandra Dianne Thompson, who allegedly orchestrated a scheme to drug a man and steal over $84,000 in cash, cryptocurrency, electronic money, and personal belongings.
The men were only at the location briefly before the friend returned home. The victim and the suspect then walked to his apartment in Brickell. According to testimony, once there, Thompson asked permission to order food and then offered to make drinks.
The man told investigators that he began feeling ill after drinking the cocktail prepared by the suspect and believes he lost consciousness for several hours with no memory of what happened. In fact, when he awoke at 11:00 a.m., he didn’t know how he had gone from the couch to the bed.
Upon checking the apartment, he realized that $10,000 in cash, his iPhone 16 Pro, a case, and an Apple Wallet were missing. He also found the door ajar and the food delivery, which, according to investigators, indicates that the man was already unconscious when the order arrived.
Later, the victim discovered that six cryptocurrency transfers totaling $72,860 had been made. The Coinbase platform managed to block other transactions; otherwise, the theft would have amounted to approximately $230,000.
How the Miami scammer was identified and arrested
According to what authorities shared with Telemundo, one of the key elements in the investigation was the security camera installed in the apartment’s living room.
The footage shows Thompson arriving at the apartment and asking the victim if anyone lived there. She then insisted on making vodka drinks.
Minutes later, when the victim was already unconscious, the woman spoke to him several times without receiving a response. Authorities also gathered surveillance video from the Gekko restaurant, the victim’s apartment building, and phone records to reconstruct the suspect’s movements.
The final clue was that the man was able to trace the last known location of her phone in New York. After contacting Spirit Airlines, the airline confirmed that Thompson had boarded a flight at Miami International Airport bound for LaGuardia Airport.
Subsequently, court orders and subpoenas were issued to obtain records of wire transfers, phone lines, and the airline.
The evidence gathered links Cassandra Thompson to the bank accounts and digital wallets that received the stolen money.
According to Local 10, the Miami-Dade County Correctional Department booked Cassandra Thompson into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 12:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.
The woman faces four charges: grand theft, money laundering, illegal use of a communication device, and computer fraud. She was released on $25,000 bail.
