NBA: Giannis Antetokounmpo to play for the Miami Heat

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors were true: the Greek Freak was sent to the Miami Heat from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Milwaukee traded Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Heat. The Wisconsin franchise received three first-round draft picks (including the 13th pick in the 2026 Draft), a first-round pick swap, and a second-round pick. Along with this draft-oriented compensation, Miami also included Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Giannis Antetokounmpo entered the NBA in the 2013 Draft and has since been arguably the best player in Milwaukee Bucks history. He led the team to its second championship in 2021, ending a 51-year title drought.

Furthermore, he was a leader in virtually every aspect of the game for the team. Throughout his 13-year career, he was named to nine All-NBA First Teams, five All-Defensive Teams, was the Most Improved Player of the 2016-17 season, and then won two consecutive MVP awards in 2018-19 and 2019-20. In that last year, he also made a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year.

Since winning the title, the franchise has struggled to retain the core of that team, with several departures and financial commitments limiting their options. It wasn’t until the 2023-24 season that they were able to bring in Damian Lillard after a successful stint with the Portland Trail Blazers, but the point guard suffered several injuries, leading to two early first-round exits.

Giannis Antetokounmpo will join the Heat after a period plagued by injuries. He was only able to play three playoff games in 2023, which resulted in an early elimination for the Heat. He was unable to play in 2023-24, and his five appearances in 2024-25 weren’t enough to prevent the loss to the Indiana Pacers. 2025-26 was his worst season, with just 36 regular-season appearances. He averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 blocks when he was able to play, but unfortunately, he saw very little action on a Milwaukee team that was desperate for a change.
